James Cameron’s groundbreaking sci-fi blockbuster Avatar has reclaimed its place as the highest earning film of all time at the global box office. The win was reported this morning by Deadline, who confirmed that the recent re-release of Avatar in China has catapulted the film to a lead over The Avengers: Eventually, 58 yuan ($8.9 million) will be added to an already strong world ranking. Box Office Mojo’s stats show that Marvel’s superhero mashup lost about $7.82 million.
According to Disney, the worldwide box office of Avat is estimated at $2.802 billion, compared to $2.797 billion for Endgame, writes Deadline. Avatar, which is now owned by Disney after its acquisition by Fox, only became the highest earning film of all time in 2010, when it surpassed Cameron’s 1997 film Titanic. Endgame caught up with Avatar in July 2019 – and now the latter is back in the lead.

Cameron reportedly shot his sequel with high-speed cameras and used state-of-the-art filming techniques to bring the film to life.
