For better or worse, many people like to wear their clothes during military, paramilitary or law enforcement operations. I get it, I get it, I get it. It is generally believed to be free of unnecessary nonsense (those who make this assumption have never participated in the gang contest I bet on) or distilled in its most elementary and effective characteristics. There is also a quality hypothesis (have you ever jumped a C-130?). But there’s an element of tactical impertinence, and I think that’s the most important characteristic. Children, from 9 months to 99 years old, all passionate about toys. Actually, Marvin Davis does: As men get older, they appreciate toys. Oz Mills hopes to use this concept in his special forces meeting: Wizards and special tactics. Because if the business community can try to co-opt the term SWAT, why not D&D?
This product is very smart. On the one hand, it is certainly well written and well presented. But on the other hand, it’s narrowly defined. I don’t see many DMs looking for that particular title. When planning an urban adventure for level 4 players, I can’t imagine getting stuck in a meeting and then asking DriveThruRPG for help. However, I’m a reasonable person and I admit I could be wrong. Don’t forget that this is a narrow and specific product. The meeting itself is only two pages long. The maps are good, but you probably won’t use them for other adventures.
But you can also find this product inspiring in other ways. Maybe it’s a segment of a larger campaign where for some reason you have to do your rounds. It could be the same link. Let’s say that if one player has real problems to deal with, but the other players don’t want to take a break, then maybe they can be kept in town and give your main campaign an uncertain break.
What I expected from Special Forces are the proposed tactics in these scenarios and how they can be implemented in a game like D&D. For example, to cut the cake when entering the room or to cover the fire. What we get isn’t bad. But this is specific. The shooters throw a person at the bruises and then pull the bolt, for example to deactivate it. Of course, any proofreader can use this tactic. But I would want the Oz Mills product even more, if it were more manual and less confrontational. I know that on the product page and in the text at the bottom of the envelope it is clearly stated that this is a deadline and nothing more. But it could be a missed opportunity that Oz does not make this book a reference for players who prefer a more tactical approach to their battle.
It’s a good product if it’s a little short. But this could be great.
The advantages of
- Typography
- can be used as a transition point between important episodes of your major campaigns or as a hook for the adventure.
Disadvantages
- brief specific meeting
- a somewhat misleading name implies a number of tactics.
