From Baldwurst’s door: The Descent to Avernus was released last September, the role play in hell is winning more and more souls. Why don’t you? A lot happens in hell: apocalyptic landscapes, evil plots, tormented inhabitants. I don’t think that’s as unusual as in some parts of the world. But still, a trip to hell can be fun, and Mike Watt of Pyromaniac Press wants to take you there for The Price of a Soul.
This adventure follows a previous one called Temple of the Goddess Opal, which Micah published more than three years ago. There was no need to be involved in this adventure – or to have knowledge – to carry it out. Everything you need to work perfectly is included in this document. But I was glad I had an older one for the record. I’m giving you this as a simple warning. Maybe you really want to buy both adventures if you have time to run both for a more enjoyable experience.
But in one fell swoop, this adventure always offers an exciting and challenging moment for level 2 or 3 characters (simple instructions for organizing meetings are included in the module). In a sense, the characters are in the service of Lasper (also called the goddess Opal). After all, she wants them to restore her lover’s soul. The restoration of Suthrain will win the favor of the Lashpera characters, including full forgiveness for any collateral damage they caused during their heroic deeds. If she fails, the characters will remain in Lasper’s sights forever, and she will damage them for the rest of their lives if she can help them.
What I’ve learned and expect from Mikey Watt’s work are his details. It would not make sense for DM to try to fully describe everything in this adventure. Instead, Micah provides a rich environment for DM that can be trusted (after training) when players show the way. In fact, a nice piece of this PDF only describes the places. For example, read the description of the storage space.
I’ve seen a lot of copycats in my playing days. But this may be the first time I’ve seen someone mimic a barrel. But you can see Micah’s collected a lot of details in a boring room. And I’m not talking about window dressing or fancy prose. A security imitator is a bad thing. But there are also opportunities for harpist espionage and attempted murder. Maybe it’s not so bad with computers to chase away innkeepers and shopkeepers, as all internet memos suggest. What if even 5% of them had treacherous warehouses like the Dark Delight?
In any case, the details of this type of game will continue throughout the adventure without becoming a grueling search – and all in style. There are great opportunities for encounters and social struggles. And a robbery on the Averna wouldn’t be complete without a hell of a car, Amiritis?
I want an answer from the people about what they do with a monotonous Crowler! It is clear from the description that nothing can be done about it.
With its irresistible goal, new magical objects (and this machine!) and the flexibility that lets players move in and out of the fire as they like, it’s a great adventure to play. Still, I wonder… what is the price of the soul?
The advantages of
- detailed data on locations, samples and NPCs.
- professional layout and design
- nuanced characters with layers of motivation and manipulation
Disadvantages
- part of the art in DMsGuild’s Resource Creator looks grainy and is out of sync with the rest of the art…
Fault! The file name is not specified.
