I’ve been thinking about it since I recently started playing BDO again.
No MMO gave me the same feeling as Mortal Online; it really felt like we were in a real place, and danger was literally lurking around every corner. I know death was a bad game. There were tons of bugs and issues, and eventually the community became very toxic. I want to break down what I think makes Mortal special and what sets it apart from other sandbox MMOs like ArcheAge, BDO, EvE, etc. I’m not sure what the difference is between Mortal and other sandbox MMOs.
- The world was huge and there was no official map. I can clearly remember stumbling into the dungeons and other places I didn’t know existed with my small group of friends.
- Community. I know there is a difference of opinion, but at its peak, the community (including the PKs) was quite large. For example, once a group was camped outside the gates of Tindrem and a large group of players were pushed to escape. It was also very nice to find a friendly person who was willing to make the special equipment you wanted for you, and this could often be done for a price well below the market price.
- PvP. Again, I know it’s controversial, but the whole PvP loot has definitely given the world an edge. Maybe it’s just me personally, but I like games where there’s a real risk compared to the reward, and a simple XP deduction or object demotion doesn’t suit me. You have to plan what you are going to bring to your adventures and coordinate with other players to go where my adrenaline is strongest.
- Places. Even though Mortal wasn’t a particularly pretty game, some of the locations were very atmospheric and made you feel like you were always in danger. For example, one of the starting cities had a relatively safe graveyard where new players could pick up zombies for money. In the same city, there was an underground sewer system full of thieves whose body parts could be sold for even more money than the zombies’ heads. However, the area was not safe and you were often attacked by other groups who wanted to take your things from you to sell them. As proof of this, the area outside of Tindrem was known to be dangerous, so players often moved in groups to be safe when going to other areas. It was the small details and design decisions that helped create a deeper sense of immersion.
- Camera angle. First-person games are my jam, and I think they help me see the world of the game and its scope. It also allows you to remain vigilant at all times because you cannot see behind you. Being in a narrow sewer and constantly watching other players behind your back was very tiring, making you feel even more successful.
- Fighting. Another hot topic, I know. I understand that Mortal’s fight wasn’t perfect, but it was one of the most fun MMO fights I’ve ever played. BDO and its flashy combat action is great fun, much like the more traditional combat tablets, but nothing can beat the feeling of seeing your sword hit someone’s head and fall to the ground. The combat was intense and I found it very entertaining (when it worked).
- Lack of orientation and grip. Oh, my God. I know the MMO Sandbox is highly specialized and it only helps him make a place for himself, but it’s very rewarding to start from scratch, set your own goals and achieve them. There were meta, but there was no clear way to do anything in the game, and the game itself literally gave you no direction. Again: It’s not everyone’s cup of tea and it sounds very unpleasant, but it was very satisfying once you understood the mechanics.
- Server Policy. As I said earlier, the company has indeed become toxic. However, when you hear about the battles and watch the guilds fight the camps, it seems like the world is constantly changing. Something always changed, whether it was a raid on a guild or the elimination of a small group of PKs.
All of these reasons (and some I’m probably forgetting) are why I’ve never liked another game as much as Mortal. You weren’t a great hero or chosen one, you were just an idiot trying to live in a totally cruel fantasy world. They weren’t special, and that’s what made the game special.
I remain optimistic about Mortal Online 2, and while I know Star Vault has had problems in the past, I sincerely hope the game will be a success.
TL;DR: Mortal wasn’t perfect, but no other game came close.
