Since the 1990s, the boys in my family have been big fans of the Age of Empire. We didn’t have the best gaming PC in the area, so we were a little limited in the games we could play. On a cold winter’s day in Michigan, my brother brought home a game that my father and I could try. At first, we weren’t sure what to think of Age of Empires because we’d never played games like this before! It wasn’t long before all three of us were addicted. My father managed to kill all opposition when the rich man’s age was part of his morning routine. It didn’t even take a few years for one of them to have a PC with enough performance to play one of the games from the First Era of the Empires.
That’s why I went to Age of Empires 3 magazine: Immediate final exit. I wouldn’t be too shocked to find out that I’m one of the few people who never played this game when it was released, which makes this review a real celebration!
When it comes to RTS games, OCWA is everyone’s grandfather. In terms of gameplay, the main goal of AOE is that you take your army and defeat all enemies before they can defeat you.
Of course, a game that should be about history will not always be historically correct. I was amazed at the attention given to making AOE3DE as accurate as possible, even admitting my own mistakes. In an interview, Anthony the Brave, who worked as a consultant and author on gambling to correct the often problematic images of Native Americans in AOE3, said In the Creation of Age III : DE, we have learned that we are not as attached to this value as we could be to the indigenous cultures represented in North America. That is why we have made it our task to record this: to work directly with the tribal councillors to record the uniqueness of our people, our history and our culture in a respectful and accurate way.
They have corrected the game to make sure they are using correct tribal names. For the natives of these tribes to re-record the sound so that a real language is created.
They start each game, usually with a few villagers and the center of town. You use your people to dig up resources around your city until you can build both your city and your army. The bigger your city is, the faster you can work on the development of your technology, which will eventually help to destroy your enemies.
Unlike the original OCWA, to which I am accustomed, OCWA3 offers an enormous choice of civilizations and weapons. In fact, you can play with AOE3 as one of 16 different civilizations! Depending on who chooses to play, you will receive special match bonuses. In the Ottoman city centres, for example, the villagers are born for free. Spanish experience points are gained faster, and the Japanese have sanctuaries that replace ordinary houses and generate resources.
It doesn’t matter who you play in strategy, that’s the name of the game, and you have to be a little fast with everything. It is important to remember that while you are gathering resources to build your civilization, your enemies may have started in a large area rich in resources and preparing to invade the surrounding areas. I remember being able to speed up or slow down the game in earlier versions, and if this feature was present in AOE3, I couldn’t find it.
One of the most interesting elements of the game came to me when I played the story tasks. There are currently 60 single-player story missions, which can take several hours depending on the difficulty level. The stories themselves are not historically correct, but they are funny in themselves. These levels tend to have weaker victory conditions, such as helping X number of villagers flee the city or freeing all the slaves before the arrival of a small army commanded by a general. I wish I had more goals, especially if they show up halfway, just because it keeps you going. Again, STRATEGY is the name of the game.
I know Age of Empires 3 wasn’t always chosen as the best film in the series, but I was pleasantly surprised to see how much I liked it. The amount of content available in the latest edition will allow me to continue playing this game for years to come. If I’m lucky, my dad’s computer will be good enough to convince him it’s time to come back. Even though I’m sure he can still be a tar of me and of anyone who thinks he’s good!
