Boot Hill Bounties follows the group of the Wild West Kid, Doc, Rosy and Moon as they continue their adventures after the events of Boot Hill Heroes. The group of friends come together and go on a mission to find some of the baggage handlers and save Bronco County. I’m pretty vague about the plot, because it’s hard to talk about it without giving away the events of the previous game. What I will say is that the game has a good balance of serious moments and humor. Each of the four characters feels like they have their own moment to shine, and I really enjoyed getting to know them better through this experience. Getting into Bounties on Switch is interesting because it was released before the first Heroes game on the Nintendo platform.
The game has a balance of serious moments and stupidity.
Bounties is an RPG with simple retro pixelated graphics. It looks a little more sophisticated than the previous ones, a style that will please most but might repel others with its gruff appearance. There is a lot to explore in the Wild West, from forests to cities. There are many NPCs to talk to and interact with. If you take the time to explore the world, you will learn more about its history, and perhaps find useful things online.
The more you invest in Bounty World, the more you get out of it. The large amount of dialogue will not appeal to everyone. It’s a role-playing game that requires a lot of reading, and while you can skip it and concentrate on the battles, you’ll probably miss some decent plot sections.
I think I will consider it.
Active time fights with a small key
Bounties uses a unique active time combat system where battles take place in real time and you constantly choose actions as the battle progresses. At first, this system can seem a bit cumbersome if you’re playing alone, but there’s a handy pause button that allows you to reflect on your actions at any time during combat. Battles are more like reflection than brute force. You can win by sending spam, but that often makes the fights more brutal. It’s about choosing defensive actions, healing and attacking at the right time, and reacting to what your opponent does. All in all, it makes for some entertaining fights. The only minor drawback is that some encounters seem too long, especially battles between bosses. You can equip your team with different weapons and hats that unlock new “Perks,” skills you can use in battle.
Battles are not random, as you see enemies walking around the maps, giving the player the choice to attack or dodge. Sneaking up on enemies via the web gives you an advantage in combat. If you defeat the same enemy multiple times, he will actively flee from you on the map, which is an interesting new feature. It indicates that you are at a sufficient level to continue, rather than removing the uncertainty of whether or not you are at the right level.
The deadliest of all beasts: Pigs!
In the options, you can also change the combat system to a more turn-based one if you prefer. The developer offers additional accessibility options, including difficulty modes and text speed. This is a role-playing game that seems to be suitable for all skill levels. Bounties also offers several challenges that come from your canine companion, who also acts as a rescue center when you find him in the levels. These challenges act as mini tutorials and allow you to learn many of the gameplay features of Bounties. You also get rewards for completing the tasks, making it feel like a win-win game. All of this is optional, of course; you can play the game however you want, and that’s what ultimately makes Bounties a big improvement over its predecessor.
In this game, you can even improve your cooking skills.
boost
In Bounty, you can move up almost every level. Your combat level, cooking skills, medical skills, and weapon skills. The list is somewhat endless. In addition, you can now read newspapers that offer discount coupons for use in stores, get tips on side quests, and just offer more depth and information about the world. Boat Hill Bounties is a game you can get lost in, and the simple controls make it pretty easy to get in and out of the game even when you need a break. It is the title I enjoyed most for an hour in manual mode. The game works very well in both manual and TV mode.
It’s time to stop reading the newspaper.
Optional cooperative
Boat Hill Bounties, like the first game, also includes a cooperative mode for up to four players. At any point in the game, another human or hyper-intelligent pet can pick up the jolly rascal and assist in the battles. This is an interesting feature that few people take advantage of. The problem is that between battles, only the main player has control over moving around the map, exploring, and playing the mini-games without fighting. Of course, I don’t know exactly how cooperative mode should be incorporated into the game, but Bounties makes it seem like the game is more fun when played alone.
What I mean is that all four members of the party are present from the very beginning of the game, unlike in Heroes, where everything starts slowly. So if you’re a lucky developer who has four players who want to join, with Bounties you can get them all involved pretty quickly instead of sitting on a corner of the couch looking at your phone.
I like the developers’ response to the online mode.
Horseback riding
If you’ve played and enjoyed Boot Hill Heroes, the sequel to Boot Hill Bounties is a must. It takes the RPG formula of the first game, refines it and adds a lot of extra content. It’s an example of how to make a great sequel.
Boot Hill Bounties is known as one of the great retro-inspired RPGs and makes the developers, an experimental game studio, one to keep an eye on in the future.
Final verdict: I really enjoyed it.
