A lot is expected of a sequel when it comes to video games. In the days of the NES that often meant better graphics, better gameplay and great worlds to explore. Unfortunately, the history of the puzzle genre has shown that it is not always easy to improve the original. Take a look at the order of Tetris and the order of Columns to see how difficult it can be to hit gold more than once with a puzzle. It is a kind of puzzle game where my favorite puzzle from the Picross series is included in the ever growing S-switch games. With each new version, there are often more puzzles with new game mechanisms or new ideas, and for game lovers (myself included), that’s usually enough. This can also complicate their research, and this is where Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 comes into play.
If you reread my evaluation of the original at the launch of the digital switchover in April 2017, you will see that I gave it a high score of 8.5 out of 10. Here we are three and a half years later with a sequel that looks and sounds largely identical to the last game, with very little new gameplay mechanics and relies heavily on the anime characters and the shameful storyline to try to keep the players interesting. The game modes are all the same here, and I’m very grateful for that. Whether you want to play alone, against a few CPU opponents, or against your friends on the spot or online, you’ll find many modes to match almost any puzzle you might have. The problem is that the first game has already done these things.
But it’s not just about hot flashes and there’s a new diet that’s worth your time. It’s called the battle of skills and she manages to turn it so that the game is fresh and exciting. The main gameplay is identical to the normal Puyo Puyo or Tetrisgame where you always try to destroy your characters and send garbage to the enemy. The main difference is that this mode uses some rolling mechanisms. In the beginning you choose a team of three fighters, each with unique stats, consisting of HP, MP, Attack, Defense and Restoration.
Each member of your party has a certain skill that can be discovered through the member’s expenses. It is these magical skills that make this mode entertaining, because they can really change the course of the game at the right time. These skills have a wide range of applications, and you can unlock new capacity cards that cause chaos. I won’t go into the different skills because there are some, and I want to leave a few for you to discover as you like, but as a good example of one of them, in Tetris you can use a skill that pushes all your pieces together on the right side of the screen, removes any holes and leaves an empty column on the left side of the screen. All you have to do is make a long piece of Tetris and send a lot of junk to your opponent, who then takes his HP. The first to reach zero energy loses in this creative mode, which is fun to compete against.
All the different modes are back in order. For a more detailed discussion of the different games, read my first overview of the games. I’d say the game seems a little easier this time. Maybe it’s because it offers some lessons for those who want to learn the tricks of the trade. What’s more, Adventure mode lets you discover new characters, skill-based battle maps and different styles of puzzle pieces and backgrounds, despite your brilliant story. If you play alone, this is the perfect place to spend some time in the beginning, because the game does a great job of educating you with slowly increasing complexity and presenting you with different game scenarios.
The purchase of the Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, which is at least twice as expensive as the original, is difficult to justify for those who already own the original. You really need to get in the show to earn 40 bucks more for the same experience. However, if you still need to dive into the puzzle pool, the game is worth more than your time and money. There are so many game modes to offer that it should keep you busy for hours. This is the best version of the Tetris and Puyo Puyo that you can find on the switch, and it is highly recommended. Don’t wait here for something new and crazy you haven’t seen.
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 Rating
- Graphs – 7.5/10
- The tone is 8/10.
- The course of the game – 7/10
- Late appeal – 8/10
7.5/10
Final remarks : GOOD PLACES
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is a fun puzzle game that I strongly recommend to beginners because it contains bright and colorful graphics, cheerful music and many game modes to enjoy. However, it does not improve much compared to the original game, which can now be purchased for half the price of the original game. Owners of Puyo Puyo Tetris therefore have little incentive to spend $40 more for the same experience.
