There will be a new generation of consoles, and you know what that means: EA has already created a brand new version of the FIFA franchise to attract the first PlayStation 5 users. After playing the Switch version of FIFA 20 last year and not wanting to spend time on it, I wanted to do exactly the opposite this year. I wanted to play the game’s newest port and see what EA can do with hardware, features, and so on. Although I know that this will not be the face of FIFA in the coming years, because I know that they will pay more attention to these more modern versions once people actually manage to buy the damn consoles, I wanted to see if FIFA 21 is at least a missed sporting event.
Sure, he’s handsome, but I know he could be handsome in a year or two.
According to EA, the PS5 version of FIFA 21 offers significantly better graphics than the PS4 and Xbox One, as well as completely new gameplay features, but overall it is the same game as its predecessors. The Volta is always a highlight, with the emphasis on street football, bright and light, something Street Power Soccer could not replicate. Being professional is still a very slow but useful path that focuses on one’s own creativity, this time without the simple idea of connecting things. There is also a fully licensed version of the Copa Libertadores, the South American Champions League, which is a plus in my books. Finally there is the Ultimate Team. It’s the same pathetic casino that’s always been there, and the less said about it, the better.
which appears in Volta-History mode. Let’s just say he’s a better soccer player than an actor.
Graphically speaking, FIFA 21 did not leave that impression with me. Of course it looks very good and usually works at 60 frames per second. However, this is a graphic progress that is anything but revolutionary compared to the PS5 NBA 2K21 version of the PS4. The lighting effects are clearly still of the latest generation and the players look too plastic for lack of a better word.
Two things impressed me the most. The first is the almost total absence of loading time. If there’s one game that uses the PlayStation 5 SSD, it’s FIFA 21. Switching from the menu to the game is usually immediate, so the demon souls look like Bloodborne when it comes out, minus the download time.
Who would have thought FIFA would have one of the best first implementations of DualSense triggers?
What really impressed me about this special version of FIFA 21 was the controls. Not quite in terms of gameplay in itself, because it has not changed much compared to FIFA 20 (even here it is still better than its predecessor). No, what I thought was best was the use of adaptive triggers and the DualSense screen. The controller vibrates based on the melody and intensity of the fans in the stadium, and the triggers (which your player can use to run) are more difficult to control when your team loses, which lowers a player’s morale, or when you have a lack of stamina. These subtle but clever implementations of DualSense added a whole new level of immersion to the game, and it completely surprised me.
Why am I playing for Giannis Antetokunmpo at FIFA? Not that it’s a bad thing, but I was wondering…
I did not expect that the PS5 version of FIFA 21 would be an impressive technological showcase, given the current state of the world and the higher proportion of the latest generation of consoles in the wilderness. I didn’t really notice the improvements in the graphics, but I certainly didn’t expect the Expert Advisor to offer one of the best implementations of DualSense adaptive triggers today. I’m looking forward to seeing what they can do, maybe in two years’ time, if everyone already has a PS5 or an X series. In fact, the PS5 version of FIFA 21 is worth seeing, with tons of modes, teams and licenses. But the Ultimate Team is still worthless.
Although the visual effects are quite good, they don’t look like a huge improvement over the previous generation. The frame rate is high, but from time to time there are small drops. | Although gameplay hasn’t changed much, FIFA 21 uses DualSense triggers in a very creative and intelligent way. This increases their resistance when the player is too tired to sprint. |
FIFA 21 has a much better soundtrack than in previous years. However, the storytellers and actors in full mode play a mixed game at its best. | FUT, the flagship of FIFA 21, is still microtransaction as usual, but Volta, the licensed recording of the Copa Libertadores and a large number of teams that need to play to compensate for this. |
