Nintendo has one of the strangest connections to independent games. On the one hand you have some of the most spectacular games such as Ori, Hades and Knight of the Shovel. On the other hand, the online shop is also so full of firsts that it is difficult to find anything useful. At the last Indieworld Direct in 2020, a number of matches were announced, some of which would only be released in 2021 and others on the same day. One of them was Grindstone, an interesting puzzle game, full of monsters, guts and blood.
The daily routine takes and plays this game, forget the more difficult levels and ranking.
The grindstone doesn’t play quite as expected. As you go through the levels, your goal, of course, is to get everything in each level, roughly the equivalent of three stars. Usually it is sufficient to kill a certain number of samples, one or two elite samples, and open the crate before departure. Samples are killed by chaining adjacent samples of the same color together. Elites and objects on the map usually have a number. These numbers show how far they have to go to kill them. It’s simple, isn’t it?
Once you’ve completed your first chain of more than ten monsters, a gem will appear on the map. If you end a necklace on a jewel, you can continue the necklace with a colored monster, not just the one you started the necklace with. By forcing a few gems to spawn, you can make huge necklaces, which is always satisfying. Gemstones are also useful for building a necklace long enough to kill elites or open coffins.
Animals are absolutely essential in a game that does not have a wide variety of enemies.
Normally only precious stones or wood are found in coffins. Both are used to make/purchase updates for use in levels, which makes them a little easier. You can also find instructions on how to actually unlock each update. Upgrades are mainly used to kill monsters on the map or to block sample damage.
The longer you stay in a level, the more aggressive the monsters become. Eventually you get to the point where each monster wants to attack and the only way to prevent that is to chain enough monsters together to make an opening. Either that, or just run out and finish the level. You have three hearts before you die, but anything that dies forces you to start over at the current level.
Hacking, hitting, breaking, destroying.
The music and sound effects of Grindstone are quite simple, which leads to the main point of this game. The layout and everything else leads to one simple conclusion: This game was designed as a mobile game, probably because it was originally released as an iOS and Apple Arcade. The only thing that really says it’s not a mobile game is that you don’t have to wait for your ability to charge (or pay for more).
This is not a bad thing, because mobile games are among the most popular in the world. Candy Crush essentially created the formula that Grindstone and many others follow. It’s just something to think about before you go in there. There were some very good visuals around Grindstone, and one thing to recommend is the gore option. No blood, no normal blood, no extra blood. What a great idea!
