Super Mario Bros. 35 : An exciting twist on the Battle of the Royale on Nintendo’s 35-year-old flagship platform, which has been defining video games ever since. It is now available to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers free of charge. But this is a temporary agreement with Nintendo that will close at the end of March 2021, so don’t hesitate to act quickly.
My first game was the original Super Mario Bros. on the NES when I was about four years old. It’s one of my favorite games of all time, and I can’t even count the number of times I’ve played it on the NES and all the countless gates it’s had over the years. Fortunately, all my years of playing have been useful, because Super Mario Bros. 35 takes the formula from the original game and adapts it to a multiplayer skill game. Just as Tetris 99 allows you to compete in a win-win situation, here you’ll take part in a virtual coin contest to put your Mario skills to the test.
Now, Super Mario Brothers 35 has only two modes: 35 – Artificial battles and special battles. The first one is exactly what it looks like. You start the game with one of the 32 courses, where you accidentally run over enemies and collect coins. Every enemy you defeat is sent to another player’s screen, such as the Tetris 99system of , to send unwanted Tetriminos to other players. Of course, defeated enemies of other players will also be sent to your screen. So even if you have years of experience with Mario, you have to be careful when playing.
You lose when you run out of time or when your enemies oppress you. The enemies you defeat will be sent to the competitors of your choice, such as those who target you, or perhaps those who have the most coins. At first you’ll only see some Goombas and Koopas, but as you progress through the next levels you’ll be able to defeat things like Bloopers, Cheep Cheeps and even Bowsers, which are sent to your opponent’s screen no matter what level they’re in. Believe me, it can be very difficult to go through Phase 1-2 and avoid or kill fish or Bowsers floating in the air like you never expected.
After each course you will be randomly assigned to another course, which may be at the same level again. I must have played 1:1 a hundred times, and if you play too long, it can get pretty repetitive. I hope there will be fewer losses in future updates, as I still have more than half of the levels to play.
When only five players play a session, the music goes faster and the clock ticks faster than normal. Luckily, you can gain extra time by defeating enemies and collecting bonuses. It’s a fascinating cycle I fell in love with. It’s so nice to be a winner.
Coins – a useful resource to watch out for, as the game can use 20 coins for random power-ups, such as a fireflower or superstar. The coins you have left at the end of the game will also be assigned to your player’s level, and the player who wins will also receive a lot of coins. I’ve been playing for about 7 hours and I’m on level 60, so I still have a lot of work to do.
In the special battle the same basic rules apply as in the first mode, but with additional circumstances such as starting the game with 20 pieces. Nintendo will update this mode every week, so it’s worth coming back to see what’s new in the game.
There are also custom symbols that you can remove from the game using 8-bit sprites. Every day there are bonus keys, such as winning a number of opponents, which can get a lot of coins when they are finished, so it’s worth checking. I’m curious how Nintendo will support this game in the future, as we have seen with Tetris 99. I hope and pray that the stages of Super Mario Bros. 2 and 3 will find their way here as well. Hey, a man can dream.
It’s worth mentioning that this game is only played online, which is why I was a little wary of Nintendo’s success on online servers. I’m happy to report that of all the games I’ve played, not one has been forgotten or left behind. That’s very good, because the game would of course be exciting, even with a small delay.
It’s great to see the remix of Super Mario Bros. for modern players, introducing new players to the original game in a unique way. Like Tetris 99, this name shows that almost any game can be turned into a Royal Battle.
Did I mention that this game is free (for Nintendo Switch online subscribers)? If you are a subscriber, you should play this game because it is probably the best reason to buy a subscription now ($19.99 per year). It’s great to see Nintendo smartly come out of its comfort zone and celebrate Mario’s 35th birthday. Now let’s hope that next year the Legend of Zelda 99 will be published for the anniversary of Zelda 99.

Tony’s been playing since he could walk. Pokémon Blue Version helped him learn to read. His greatest merit is not only that he played the entire Kingdom Hearts series, but also that he understood it.
