Fortress: The Warriors arrive in the franchise’s stronghold after seven years of their previous outing: Crusader 2 and it comes with new features never seen before in the franchise. It’s still a Stronghold title where you start each mission by stockpiling supplies in your attic, but the developers have refined the gameplay and made it better in every way. After playing the full version of the game, I can safely say that the delays were worth it. If you’re not familiar with this franchise, you should know that it’s a fortress: Warlords is a castle building simulation where you start with a small dungeon, then expand it by gathering resources and building an army to fight your enemies in brutal battles.
Perhaps one of the most important additions to the title is the new Warlords mechanic, which is also reflected in the game’s title. Warlords are additional AI-controlled players scattered throughout the maps that can be conquered and controlled through combat and diplomacy. In your chest you will receive gold and diplomacy points, which you can spend with these warlords to give them orders. Whether through combat or diplomacy, once a warlord is on your side, he proves to be a valuable ally in various scenarios. Depending on their archetype, each warlord in the game offers unique privileges and perks to get them on your side. Depending on your campaigns, the warlords will become more difficult in later stages, even complementing your main enemies.
These warlords have both small rescues and real castles defended by armies and thick walls, depending on their level. To gain control of these warlords, you can either fight them, kill their armies, break through their defenses and force the warlord to kneel before you, or use diplomacy and win them over. Whatever path you choose, once you have them on your side, they can help you in many ways, for example. B. by sending you gold or diplomatic points, notifying you of upcoming attacks, revealing your map, attacking your enemies, or even sending reinforcements if your enemies attack you.
I found these warlords very useful during my missions, as they were always helpful when on your side. You can also upgrade them to make them stronger against enemy attacks. The enemy can also capture them when they attack, so sometimes you have to defend your captured warlords as well. It’s worth getting as many warlords on your side as possible. Some of them also offer unique features. The more Warlords you have on your side in a mission, the stronger you feel, as there is a Warlord castle all over the map, which also affects the attacks and planning of the main opponents in each game.
I’m on my way to the units, Fortress: The Warlords do not disappoint. Each faction in the game has its own unique units. You have a variety of infantry and siege units that you can produce and use in battle. Depending on the faction you will have different units in each category of infantry and siege, and depending on the tactics these units will also differ from each other. Thak Phan, for example, prefers to use auxiliary archers and auxiliary speeders as his main infantry units, while Genghis Khan prefers to use archers and siege weapons to ambush his opponents. Qin Shihuang and Toyotomi Hideyoshi also have their own combat tactics and units to suit their attack style and economy.
Because you will have to besiege many castles in the game, the developers have made sure that you have a lot of siege material in the game. Depending on the faction you choose, you have trebuchets, fire oxen and more at your disposal. Fans from long ago will remember how to play with your trebuchets, and they’ll be happy to know that Stronghold: In Warlords, in addition to the normal ammo, you can equip various items that you can throw at your enemies, such as for example. B. Dead cows and pigs.
In addition to the trebuchet, you can build siege towers, rocket launchers and hwachas to lay siege to your enemies. Each of these siege weapons has its own strengths and bonuses. From the fort: Warlords use gunpowder weapons, the developers made sure the game was also inspired by Chinese, Mongolian and Japanese history. Each of the units in the game, whether siege units or infantry, roughly represents the factions and era of the game. Besides the siege units, you also have enough defenses to protect the castle. You can set up various traps around your walls, and when your enemies arrive, you can kill them by activating the traps, for example. B. by throwing barrels of fire at them.
Depending on your mood, you can jump into different types of game modes in the game. The game features four main campaigns that follow the journey of each of the four new characters introduced in the game, including Thuk Phan, Qin Shi Huang, Genghis Khan and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. You can play each of their campaigns and see how they rise or fall in their own time. In short, the program of Fortress: The history of the warlords begins in 300 BC. Chr. in China and existed until the 16th century. Each character in the game has their own timeline, story, campaign and game design.
In addition to the four main campaigns, there is also an economic campaign, which is a trademark of every Stronghold title. This campaign is not focused on battles and battles, but presents complex scenarios where we have to try to overcome problems like drought and food shortages, and many of the same scenarios where managing the economy is your main concern. If you want a more relaxed environment, you can switch to Free Build mode and relax by building and expanding your castle at your own pace without worrying about battles.
Multiplayer is also an important part of Stronghold: Warlords is a game that offers PvP and cooperative modes. The cooperative mode allows players to play together in the same castle. They must manage the construction of their castle, manage the economy, and train their troops to survive the game. The co-op mode works online, so even if your friend isn’t on the same computer, you can easily form a team and play together. This opens up a whole new way to experience the game, as you can both decide what tasks each player should perform and switch roles during the game.
In addition to the cooperative mode, the game also contains plenty of PvP action. With another castle, players can compete against each other and try to defeat each other by besieging their castles with all their might. At the same time, players must take care of their castle and protect it from attacks by other players. I didn’t get to try out the multiplayer aspect of the game during my review, but I’ll give it a good try once the game is released and players from around the world get to play with it. You can engage in one-on-one skirmishes with friends or random players from around the world at any time.
Fortress: Warlords is a glorious return of the franchise to its roots with new features and improved gameplay. The AI is now smarter than ever, and the beautiful graphics, fluid design combined with a stunning soundtrack that really fits the overall theme of the title. The new factions all look and play well enough to provide enough variety for players to exploit each other’s weaknesses and play to the strengths of their own faction. From a technical standpoint, the game runs pretty well, with no FPS dips or glitches that interfere with gameplay in any way. I’ll be diving into the multiplayer soon, so you can expect a separate article soon.
Last block :
After seven years, Firefly Studios has finally released a brilliant title in the Stronghold franchise, and I’m very happy to see that the developer hasn’t lost its touch in all these years. Warlords is indeed the best modern Fortress title. It builds on the solid foundation of the franchise and expands on it in every way possible to deliver a title that will appeal to both modern gamers and long-time fans of the franchise. The new setting and storylines work wonders, and the game fits well with all the new warlords introduced in the game. The franchise may be old, but Fortress: Warlords is a newcomer to the modern real-time strategy genre that will appeal to a wide audience. For me, this game evokes a lot of memories and nostalgia, but I can easily recommend it to fans who grew up with Stronghold, and even to new players who love real-time strategy and building castles.
Overall score: 8.5/10
