The phones are equipped with state-of-the-art hardware and a number of special features that you won’t find in any other phone on the market. The ASUS ROG Phone 5 builds on the foundation laid by the ROG Phone 3. ASUS has removed the number 4 from its lineup because it is associated with superstition in East Asian countries.
All three editions, the ASUS ROG Phone 5, ROG Phone 5 Pro and ROG Phone 5 Ultimate, are powered by the Snapdragon 888 processor. In the base model of the ROG Phone 5, the RAM and storage configuration start with 8GB LPDDR5 and 128GB, which can be expanded to 16GB and 256GB respectively.
For the ASUS ROG Phone 5 Pro, the RAM and storage configurations are 16GB and 512GB respectively. Finally, the Ultimate version gets a whopping 18GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.
The back of the ROG Phone 5 features a matrix pattern of the ROG logo that can display a gradient of two colors at once, instead of a single solid color. The Rog Phone 5 Pro is equipped with a miniature PMOLED color screen called ROG Vision. It can be used to display images or custom messages for incoming alarms.
The ROG Phone Ultimate has a monochrome screen. The screen displays customizable images for incoming calls, while charging or while loading a game. The ASUS ROG Phone 5 features a 6.78-inch AMOLED display, a panel made from Samsung’s specially manufactured E4 material. The refresh rate of the screen is 144Hz, which is the highest in the phone.
The display has a sampling rate of 300 Hz and a latency of 24.3 ms. ASUS also claims a maximum brightness of 800 nits, 23% higher than the previous model. The phones are also equipped with a Pixelworks i6 processor that uses AI to improve image quality, convert SDR content to HDR, remove visual noise and much more.
Asus designed the phones to have a performance advantage from other components, and surprisingly the biggest gain came from the battery. All three models are equipped with 6000 mAh batteries. The battery is divided into 2 cells of 3000 mAh and is in MMT orientation.
According to Asus, the energy delivered to these cells comes from the center instead of one end, reducing impedance and heat during charging. The new battery is also designed to take advantage of the phone’s cooling system. The phones also feature 65-watt HyperCharge technology and Qualcomm QuickCharge 5.0.
Not everything has changed from the previous model. The camera setup in all three phones remains the same, and it’s still a 64-megapixel Sony IMX686 sensor for the main camera, a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and a 5-megapixel macro camera. On the front, you’ll find the same 24-megapixel selfie camera. However, there are some new features and software improvements that can improve the camera’s performance a bit.
The ASUS ROG Phone 5 will be available in March 2021 for a starting price of around $950. The ASUS ROG Phone 5 Pro will be available in April 2021 for a starting price of around $1,425. The limited edition of the ASUS ROG Phone 5 Ultimate will be available in May 2021 with a starting price of around $1,543. With this limited edition device, ASUS will also offer fans a collection of ROG product gifts.
