All the data in the world’s Pokédex means nothing if the world is empty or hollow. And it’s up to the NPCs to keep the world full and alive.
To me, a good list of trainer classes is the difference between a good and a bad Pokémon game. And I bet that’s true for a lot of people, because there are billions of coaches that you remember just by playing these games.
I’m going through my favorite activities to try and prove it.
15. Birdwatcher
There’s only one reason I put birders here, and it’s not because they’re the best.
No, it’s because I really want to know what kind of bird he keeps in his cage. I’ll never have an excuse to write about a birding course again, so I’m out.
I mean, why a cage?
If it’s a Pokémon, you don’t have to lock it up unless it’s in a Pokéball.
And if they’re not Pokémon, how can you tell the difference between normal animals and animals that can be legally made to fight each other? The world needs answers.
14. Error trap
I don’t know if it’s just me, but my earliest memory of Pokémon is the Viridian Forest.
I remember the insect traps in the woods very well, and I don’t know why.
I think he’s one of the first coaches we had trouble with.
She is an icon, and she deserves respect.
Although modern versions of the game have abandoned the primitive forest trophy, I still think the original bug catcher design (you know, with the ridiculous hat) deserves a place on this list. Even if it’s only downstairs.
13. Ace-pair / Stiff pair
Class matching was replaced by ace matching after Gen I.
Game Freak apparently didn’t want kids to think of couples in the Pokémon world.
Thanks to them, we never met any enemies (except for the Pokémon Ranger Guardian characters, and thank goodness for that).
I put this dynamic duo on the list because I just want what they have. My son doesn’t play Pokémon, so honestly I’m a little jealous.
12. Walking
The class of the traveling teacher has the same place in my heart as the class of the bug catcher.
It’s just one of those iconic images that I will forever associate with Pokémon.
I remember the old orange cap, the big ugly beard, the huge backpack and the Santa Claus-like belly of the old tourist. I’ve spent so much time in caves in my previous generation that I’ve probably seen more hikers than anyone else, which probably plays into this decision to some extent.
11. Sister
The nurse supervisor type was only introduced in General V and is therefore relatively new.
The fact that this girl manages to keep her job on the front lines while finding time to fight is admirable enough to deserve a place on this list.
But there is something about the design that I like.
It’s that simple. But combined with the animation, it’s beautiful.
I’m a fan of all the new types of professional coaches that have come along with Gen V, and nursing is a perfect example of why.
10. Biker
Charles the Heartbreaker.
He was on my list of the best NPCs of all time, so I’m praising him again.
As a motorcyclist, he embodies everything this class of coaches stands for.
He’s dusty, tough, and a bum.
He rides with the wind, just him and his motorcycle on the open roads of Unova. He’s a heartbreaker …. and his name is …… – Charles.
9. Fishermen
I hate fishing.
My dad tried to make me do this when I was younger, but I couldn’t stand it. It was so boring.
Maybe I would have picked up the hobby if he was a little more coach.
I’m not here to blame you for my injury (at least not on this list).
In the world of Pokémon, fishermen are just happy. That’s all I can use to describe it.
They are so content with their life by the sea that nothing seems to bother them. Everyone you talk to is excited and ready to spend every minute of the day catching a new Magikarp.
And it’s a life I’d like to enjoy.
8. Floating
Okay, we’ve all seen too much of these third generation boys and girls.
But let’s leave that aside for now.
The floats in this list speak for themselves. If you’ve read my list of favorite gym characters, you know exactly what I’m referring to.
If not, don’t worry! Go ahead and enjoy your innocence while you have it.
7. Juvenile
Young Joey is perhaps the most popular Pokémon NPC of all time.
At least he’s still in the conversation when it comes to coaches.
If there are no other truly memorable young men, Joey is strong enough to carry the entire coaching class on his back.
And that’s something we have to respect.
6. Team Screams Grunt
I only talk about one gender when I talk about the Team Yell coaching class (twice, you have to guess which gender).
It’s totally biased, I’ll readily admit.
I don’t even like the Scream Team.
But I like punks and goths, and that’s all I can say about it.
5. Ace Trainer
A top coach had to be somewhere on that list.
If anyone says this is not one of the best coaching classes of all time, they lose all credibility in my eyes.
For years, Ace Trainers were the strongest non-episodic NPC battles Pokémon had to offer.
Or in other words: They have been a great resource for XP.
Pokémon weren’t always as simple as they are now. Younger players won’t remember spending 10 hours upgrading your team because you could only train one Pokémon at a time, and that’s a shame.
Previously, it was possible to build a much deeper bond with each Pokémon than in the new generations.
Coaches Aces was a big part of that experience, and a great discovery.
The first fight was almost guaranteed to have a level or two that could buy you an hour of hard work.
4. Musician
Why the musicians did not return, I will never know.
Having Game Freak force them to play their instruments and bring the sound into the zone made them feel alive.
They weren’t props. They were part of a living, moving universe.
This is something Gen V has done very well compared to others, and the music classes are an example of that.
The design was cool, but not crazy.
The reason it’s so high on my list is because it’s an extra layer of interactivity.
3. Lady parasol
She’s cute.
That’s it. That’s the file.
Since General III and I hope she’ll be around for a while.
2. Pokémon Breeder
Do I need to explain why Pokémon breeders are on this list?
Everyone who plays Pokémon after the game is either a genius hunter or an adversary, and both use the services of Pokémon breeders.
They work hard and allow us to do so many things we wouldn’t otherwise be able to do.
Coincidentally, this is by far the most common type of coach we talk to.
Even if the design is a little cheesy, it would be downright disrespectful to miss the instructor’s breeding course.
1. Pig plasma
Team Plasma is the best rogue Pokémon team ever created.
This faction actually has some moral complexity and a gray area in its beliefs, not one of the options A : I want to rule the world or option B: I want to destroy the world.
I don’t know who they hired to write Team Plasma, but Game Freak can really help bring that person back.
Everything about this faction was great, including both versions of the draft.
The original BW plasma grenades were inspired by medieval crusaders. So not only were they great, but they stayed on topic with all their liberating beliefs.
And in some ways, the redesign of BW2 was even better.
They went from crusaders to GI Joe’s special forces.
The black battle vests, face masks and berets looked far better than any team we had seen before, and any team we have seen since.
I look forward to the day we get a Gen V remake in about 8 years. Unova wasn’t ready yet, and neither was Plasma.
