The Ultimate Character List –

Before we get down on our knees, let’s go back to the ’90s.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a very influential work of art – and not only because of its character, philosophical themes or amazing staging.

You see, NGE has given the host community the term zettai ryouiki, which refers to the absolute territory outside Japan.

What started as a force field barrier in the mecha of fantasy anime became a term for the glorious part of a character’s thigh between socks or stockings and a skirt (or even shorts).

It’s a strange thing now known to anime fans. And I have here a list of the best ZR figures in the history of anime.

15. Nadeko Sengoku

Anime: Nisemonogatari

The Monogatari franchise is flooded with top girls or waifu candidates.

But not surprisingly, Nadeko Sengoku is one of the smaller favorites. In fact, you can easily find hate remarks about Nadeko.

But even if you’re not a big fan of Nadeko as a character, you can certainly enjoy her best moments of zettai smell in Nisemonogatari.

ZR Nadeco scenes are few and far between. But here, Studio Shaft has clearly prioritised quality over quantity.

Shaft has chosen the best possible angles to show off his white knee-length maxi, wrinkled skirt and sleeveless pink top.

Some people won’t like the generosity of her hips in the infamous scenes in which she plays Twister and lies down, but I’m more than grateful.

14. Set

Anime: Katanagatari

Togami is probably the most unusual entry on my list. Mainly because the Katanagatari series itself has a clear visual style.

It’s also what makes a female MC even more worthy:

The designs of the Togame characters are a relief compared to the typical but beloved ZR look of school uniforms and casual wear, the kind of style that can be found at Uniqlo or Zara.

Her small physique fits well with her white hair (long and short) and her oriental and asymmetrical outfit in purple and blue shades.

Togama’s skirt looks torn, but it’s deliberate. It also offers the viewer an unusual gap between the thighs.

13. Maria Imari

Anime: The art society is in trouble!

Just like Nadeko Sengoku, Maria Imari doesn’t have much screen time at ZR. But it’s the nobility of these few scenes that brings them out.

If I would only judge the perfection of ZR’s performance, Mariah would easily be in the top 5.

Why is that?

Although she only has a small character, Mari has a scene in which the male MC Subaru Uchimaki carries her on his shoulders. A holy ZR on either side of his face, a feminine joy that surrounds him.

Subaru then closes his eyes and feels ZR with his hands, an impossible act that only a teenager in a romantic comedy would dare do.

12. Jano Erica

Anime: Shirobako

Shirobako has a huge ensemble. Probably one of the biggest in the anime world.

It’s a necessary choice because it’s about life in the fragile animation industry.

And that’s exactly why the design of the characters is important:

This makes it easier for the viewer to distinguish and get to know the different characters.

In Jano’s case she had blond twin-horse tails, a green cardigan, a tsunderevo and striped stockings, the latter of which were relatively rare in ZR shots.

Jano reminds me a bit of Soul Eater, because of her eyes and the pins in her hair. And I love her hard work, even if she had personal problems.

11. Taiga Aisaka

Anime: Toradora!

Speaking of tsundere, Yano is haunted by none other than the princess loli tsundere himself, the taiga Aisaka.

I had actually forgotten that she was wearing black tights because the expressions on her face and the shock of her hair kept attracting my attention.

But yes, one of the best girls of all time has a hole with hipsters – and her red top distinguishes her from many cartoon schoolgirls.

Tyga is also one of the cutest girls in ZR. Someone who can kick your ass, but who is ultimately a caring and trustworthy friend who knows his flaws and wants to change for the better.

10. Rory Mercury

Anime: TOR

GATE is a treasure trove of fantastic creatures.

And the same goes for beauties like Touka, the elf Luna Marceau, and Delilah the warrior rabbit.

Then there’s Rory Mercury, half a drawer that’s over 960 but looks like a normal 13-year-old girl.

If she didn’t wear her halberd all the time, Rory would fit into Akihabara. Especially because the gothic style of Lolita is still very popular among the otaku.

Accessible and fun (especially if you don’t care how old she really is) but intimidating when you’re on your opponent’s side, Rory’s ZR is something quite different, given the garters attached to her black stockings that seem to offer a dual view of the gap between her thighs.

9. Kaho Hinata

Anime: Mixture S

Besides the Gothic lolitas, Akihabara also has a café for cleaning ladies where Kaho Hinata works – and she is even paid to be a tsundere.

There’s nothing special about his appearance:

Kaho has a blond tail, blue eyes, white gloves and a good blue uniform. She also has white behind the knee.

And it is this typical character design that makes her sympathetic, as if she were the exact opposite of Rory Mercury.

You’d expect the girl to look more like Rory.

Instead, visitors have a relaxing view of Kaho. It is the contrast between her behaviour at work and her style that makes her so attractive.

8. Megumi Katou

Anime: Saekano: How to raise a boring girl.

It’s funny how the anime (originally) portrays Megumi as this brown girl who hardly draws attention to herself – and yet she is one of the most popular anime girls of the 2010s.

It is also a great strength in the design of the characters.

If you weren’t already under the spell of his boring school uniform that lit up his hips and legs, you wouldn’t be ready for the outfit Tomoya put on in the first place.

Megumi’s summer dress is simply stunning, with its enveloping white design and red cardigan adding pop to the look.

So you see her with a white beret and white hips and you want to make a whole game based on her.

7. Aqua

Anime: KonoSuba

Often described as a useless goddess (who can at least party and drink all night), Aqua has a very mysterious character design:

Fans don’t know if she’s wearing panties or not.

Some light reference illustrations from the novel and manga showing her in lingerie, but the anime shows none. Is this a service to the fans and hilarious conspiracy theories?

Yet Aqua offers wide thighs between a blue miniskirt and knee socks, with the added bonus of transparent purple lingerie.

Her beautiful blue outfit fits her name (and her role as a water goddess), and Aqua is by far the funniest character here.

6. Emilie

Anime: Re:Zero.

From one isekai to another Re:Zero has only one Emilia, also known as Aries, the best daughter selected by Subaru.

Fans can argue endlessly about who’s the best girl on the show.

But it is wrong to be mistaken in the real attraction of Emilia, a silver-haired elf from the forest of Elior who wants to become a worthy ruler.

Plus, she looks divine in a white and purple outfit. A subtle combination of long sleeves and short sleeves in the right places, which draws just enough attention to the ZR without neglecting the overall feminine beauty.

5. Isuzu Sento

Anime: Amagi Diamond Park

Does anyone remember how shocking it was for Kyoto Animation to show the fan service from the start?

Nobody ever thought about it, but that’s what happened:

Isuzu Sento and his back in sight, just out of the bathroom. To say it didn’t immediately make her memorable is a complete lie.

Of course, Isuzu didn’t have that level of fan service in the episodes that followed. But she doesn’t need it anyway.

Isuzu’s calm and selfless behavior, his magical weapon and his voluptuous figure are more than enough to steal hearts.

Besides, who doesn’t like black stripes around their white thighs? It’s a small addition with a big impact.

4. Yukino Yukinoshita

Anime: My romantic teen comedy SNAFU

Oregairu is getting better and better with each new installation.

And it was this continuous improvement of the plot, the characters and the production of the anime itself that led Yukino to catapult himself to this place, causing a hip fracture.

I like the big difference between Yukino in S1 and Yukino in S3.

She began by being that cold, straightforward person, someone who had the looks and the skills (and the wealth) to be popular, but who was difficult to approach.

We then see her coming out of her shell and feel more comfortable with her feminine side and her love for Pan and the cats.

And before you know it, you’re already enjoying the stretch skirt between the checkered skirt and the stockings more than the much more curious ZR.

3. Kitoge

Anime: Nisekoy

Cheetoj is one of the cutest girls in anime.

And the choice of colour is an important factor in knowing why.

Her aquatic blue eyes are striking, and I love the blonde and pink hues of her hair, with a huge red ribbon on.

Then you see his blue collar and skirt – but it’s not the typical blue. It is a kind of bright blue that suits its (possible) liveliness.

This care for her appearance, including her slender silhouette and good posture, brings her hips forward.

We can clearly see her walking, and the emphasis is on her hips between her short skirt and black tights. And it’s completely enchanting.

2. Eriri Spencer Sawamura

Anime: Saekano: How to raise a boring girl.

Yutaha is unfortunately not on the list because she doesn’t have a ZR in her stocking, so the Saekano trio didn’t end here.

But my best daughter, Eri, wins a silver medal with her school uniform.

Isn’t she perfect?

Her slender silhouette, her two blonde tails, her bright blue eyes, her sunny temperament and the fact that she is Tomoya’s childhood friend and a whatchamacallit artist, make her a character that pale with jealousy.

His black tights are common, of course.

But Eriri, as the owner, makes it priceless; an outfit that fans like me can appreciate even more.

Since I have very strong feelings for her, it makes sense that her RZ is stronger than Yukino and Chitoge’s – but not enough to kill my first choice.

1. Rin Tosaka

Anime: Lot/Night

No one can get near the queen of zettai riuika, who is Rin Tosaka.

Seriously, you can read 50 threads about absolute territory in an anime – and it will be a first-class choice (or at least a frequent one).

Infostable should be better known in 2020 thanks to the highly successful adaptation of Demon Layer. But we can’t ignore the goodness of his Fate projects, especially the Unlimited Blade Works projects that made fans happy with Rin’s divine ZR recordings.

Rin has mastered the art of the ZR, with the most perfect hips wedged between his iconic black tights and black skirt.

Consider his equally iconic red long-sleeved top, two black tails and his cute version of a chick.

Jettai Ryoiki wouldn’t be the same without Rin Tohsaki. And the world is a better place.
