God of War (2018)
It would be a shame to skip this PS exclusive title just because it’s not available on other platforms. After the first 7 games, the focus is on Greek and Norse mythology. The camera is placed much closer to Kratos, giving the player a more intimate experience of Kratos’ emotions. The entire game feels like a continuous single player movie, with no cuts or loads in between. The only other game for this device was Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, which came out eight months before God of War.
In the game you can fight against Aesir and Vanir gods like Baldur, Freya, Mimir, Modi, Mangi, etc. With one of the best controls and scenarios, it won the award for the best game of 2018. If you love Nordic myth, this is the only game you should play. An untitled God of War sequel is also in the works, where you can see and experience Ragnarok for yourself. You will surely fight Odin and Thor, two fathers who lost their beloved sons at your hands.
Hellblade : Senua’s Sacrifice
Hellblade puts you in the shoes of Senua, a Celtic Pictish warrior who has just lost her lover to the Norsemen who sacrificed him to the Blood Eagle. If she loses it, guess what she’ll do? She does not mourn his death, but goes straight to Helheim to retrieve her lover’s soul from the hands of the goddess Hel. She’s a strong woman. She is one of the most intriguing female characters in modern games. Who else do you need as you explore and encounter the demons of Viking hell? Senua is also working on a sequel that explores the depths of the Viking mythos.
For the honour
It’s not really a Viking game, but one of the three main classes is the Viking clan. The Vikings in this game are brutal warriors who have survived the harsh conditions of the world after a catastrophic event. This is the best way to live like a Viking and fight against the best knights and samurais.
Special entry: Skyrim
I know what you’re thinking: How can a fantasy game set in a world of dragons and monsters be considered a Viking game? But back in 2011, when AAA Vikings were still rare, Skyrim gave you a platform to wear horned helmets and hold mead horns. You could fight a giant dragon whose language sounded almost like ancient Norse to the untrained ear. Already in the character creation menu, you could choose a class called Nord whose blood was resistant to 50% frost damage from the start. If that doesn’t look like a real Viking, we don’t know what does.
This list is far from complete, we will update this article with other good Viking-themed video games of all time that you can play now in 2021. These games, based on the Vikings, introduce you to Nordic culture and myths in complete safety. Come back soon to find out more!
