Deletion from list
End of August 2020. Goodbye, the PlayStation 4 has been taken out of the rubbish heap in Australia, Europe and North America. August was the last month that Deponia’s farewell sale was included in the PlayStation Store discount. No explanation was given, but at the beginning of November 2020 Daedalic Entertainment had started answering Twitter requests with the following comment:
We’re really sorry, but it seems that Sony’s position on certain scenes in the game has changed drastically – so it’s likely to stay that way until something changes again. Unfortunately this also applies to the [Deponia] collection with Goodbye, Deponia.
Unleashes entertainment on Twitter
It is not clear what content is being questioned, but the whole series has been criticized for racism, sexism and the representation of cultures and social classes (Rock Paper Shotgun, Big High Word). It turns out that the careful control by Sony in Australia was even stricter, which meant that the original deposit was removed from the list in that region as well. As of December 2020, none of the entries in the series had been removed from the list of other digital platforms.
About the game
No more chaos, no more destruction, no more Rufus. Not one, not two, but three Rufus cause all kinds of senseless chaos in the long-awaited adventure comedy Goodbye, Deponia! The Organon is planning to destroy the Depogna, the beautiful gate has (again) disappeared and the antihero Rufus simply can’t help getting in his way.
The only thing Rufus, inventor and free spirit, wanted was to get out of the garbage dump of the planet Depogna and settle in Elysium, a paradise revolving around Depogna, as a spaceship reserved for the higher social classes. Goal, the former Elysian girl for whom Rufus fell from head to toe, always seems to be the key to his efforts …and the elevator that will take him into space. Eventually Rufus came up with what seemed like the perfect plan.
And yet everything that can go wrong suddenly goes wrong. Rufus is (originally in disguise) at a motorway junction under strict Orgen guidelines, while Goal disappears. If Rufus comes across a cloning machine, he thinks he’s found a way out. A copy of the clone should help him out of his situation. But an inexplicable mistake leads to complications and the door leaves our hero again. He’s got three big problems to solve now: He must rediscover his destiny, reach the Elysée Palace and prevent the destruction of the entire planet Deponia by Organon.
Three problems that only three Rufus could solve – so the failed inventor decides to clone himself! This has crazy consequences for the player: In Farewell Depot, the player sometimes has to control and use all three Rufus to perform tasks together – even though Rufus stumbles over himself so often.
Farewell to Deponia is the epic conclusion of the Deponia trilogy and the continuation of the German Game Award 2013. The award-winning series Deponia consists of three whimsical adventure stories about the landfill of the planet Deponia. These classic tablets not only inspire comedy fans and adventurous veterans, but also newcomers to the genre. The humorous series Deponia impresses with its beautiful 2D comic strips, sarcastic hand-drawn dialogues and rich black humour. It has received numerous press awards, including the German Game Prize and many other awards from German developers.

Delisting
Goodbye Deponia and the Deponia Collection were delisted on PlayStation 4 across Australian, Europen, and North American territories in late August of 2020. August was the last month that Goodbye Deponia was included in a discount sale on the PlayStation Store. No explanation was given but by early November of 2020 Daedalic Entertainment began replying to Twitter inquiries with the following comment:
We are sorry, but it seems that the perspective at Sony on some scenes in the game changed drastically – which is why it will likely stay this way until something changes about this again. Unfortunately this affects the [Deponia] collection with Goodbye Deponia as well.
Daedalic Entertainment Tweet
It is unclear exactly what content was brought into question but the entire series has been criticized (Rock Paper Shotgun, Big Tall Words) over racism, sexism, and its representations of cultures and social classes. Sony’s scrutiny in Australia appears to have been even more strict leading to the delisting of the original Deponia in that region as well. As of December 2020 no entries in the series have been delisted on other digital platforms.
About the Game
More chaos, more destruction, more Rufus. Not one, not two, but three Rufuses cause all kinds of crazy mayhem in the long-awaited adventure comedy Goodbye Deponia! The Organon plans the destruction of Deponia, the lovely Goal has (once again) disappeared, and anti-hero Rufus just can’t seem to stop getting in his own way.
All inventor and free spirit Rufus wanted to do was to get off the junkyard planet of Deponia and move to Elysium, the paradise orbiting Deponia as a spaceship reserved for the highest echelons of society. Goal, the ex-Elysian girl that Rufus has fallen head over heels for, still seems to be the key to his endeavor…and to the elevator that will get him to space. Finally, Rufus has come up with a seemingly perfect plan.
And yet, everything that could possibly go wrong suddenly does go wrong. Rufus finds himself (initially in disguise) on a highway cruiser amongst stern-faced officials of the Organon, while Goal goes missing. When Rufus stumbles upon a cloning machine, he believes to have found his way out. A clone copy is supposed to help him out of his predicament. But an “inexplicable” error causes complications and Goal slips from our hero’s reach once again. Now, he has to solve three major problems: He needs to find Goal again, reach Elysium and prevent the destruction of the entire planet of Deponia by the hand of the Organon.
Three problems that only three Rufuses could solve – and thus, the luckless inventor decides to clone himself! This leads to crazy ramifications for the player: In Goodbye Deponia, the player occasionally needs to control all three Rufuses, using them to complete tasks together – despite Rufus stumbling over himself so often.
Goodbye Deponia is the epic conclusion to the Deponia trilogy and sequel to the best German game of 2013 (German Computer Game Awards). The award-winning Deponia series comprises of three wacky tales of adventure from the junkyard planet Deponia. These classic point & click romps not only delight comedy fans and adventure veterans, but also newcomers to the genre. The humorous Deponia series impresses with beautiful, hand-drawn 2D comic graphics, sarcastic dialogues and plenty of black humor. It has received numerous press awards, among them the German Computer Game Award (Deutscher Computerspielpreis) and many other German developer awards.
