Katamari Damacy ReRoll is the HD remastering of the original Katamari Damacy, exclusively released on PS2 in 2004. While the game was only moderately well received in Japan at the beginning, Katamari Damashi was an incredible success in North America and was even voted best game of the year by The Times in 2004. Katamari Damacy ReRoll was originally released for the Nintendo Switch in December 2018 and is now available for PS4 and Xbox One from November 2020.
In a state of intoxication, the king of the whole cosmos decided to destroy an eccentric and divine being, all the stars in the sky, the moon of the earth and all other celestial bodies except the earth. The king acknowledges and accepts his mistake and orders his 5 centimeter long son, the prince, to go to earth with the magic ball of Katamari(s) to pick up the debris and recreate the stars and the moon in order to restore order to the universe.
Katamari Damacy ReRoll is a unique 3D puzzle game in which players, like the aforementioned prince, have to push their ball to pick up all the debris lying around. This happens with both joysticks at the same time. Access to the controls is a bit difficult in the beginning because you have to maneuver in sometimes confusing areas and avoid large objects because you can’t pick them up in the beginning.
Of course, when you start, you can’t just take anything. You must first select smaller items to increase the width of the bale so that you can select larger items such as cows later. However, picking up blunt objects makes the ball difficult to move and can sometimes make it out of reach
During the journey, if you collect different objects, obstacles such as larger objects and real estate will get in your way. It is important to avoid them as much as possible, e.g. by hitting those who shoot at certain elements of your ball to reduce the size of the ball. For each level, the king asks the prince to build catamarans of a certain size within a certain time. When you have reached the right size with a little time, you can continue the game by making the largest ball possible.
Katamari Damacy ReRoll has one of the most original, eccentric and unique presentations. The game is very colourful and very cute; the prince looks like he’s made of different shapes, while in the few cut scenes we have, the characters are all block characters, which is rather humorous. The soundtrack follows an unusual game plan; it is unique, cheerful and different from everything else. The score is endless and often turns out to be one of the most popular player soundtracks since its first release in 2004.
Katamari Damacy ReRoll is definitely one of those games I never get tired of. Often you start with one level, then with the other, and so on. It has a unique and indescribable charm that can captivate players. Even if it takes some time to get used to it; not because they don’t age well, but mainly because they fit the unique character of the game, it remains a classic for the game. If you have to smile, take this.
