Developer Housemarque shared new details about PS5’s upcoming exclusive title, Returnal, revealing details about in-game combat, weapons and fans. Returnal is currently one of the most anticipated titles for PS5, and Housemarque is making sure it stays that way, with new details and trailers coming out regularly for the title.
The latest update comes from Harry Krueger, creative director of Housemarque. He shared the details on the official PlayStation blog, where he detailed the gameplay of the game. Returnal is a unique blend of gaming styles, as it combines the unique explosive action of arcade games for which the developer is known, with delicate controls and bullet-turn-style gameplay. The game is played in third person, and the combat is fast and hard.
The weapons game will be intense and players will also have plenty of time to explore and travel as the game features Atropos environments generated by the process. The game is challenging, but Harry says it’s also very rewarding and varied and deep enough to keep players coming back for more. Discover below the new fight trailer released for the return:
As mentioned earlier, in the game you play the role of Selene, who has a large number of weapons and gadgets to survive on the hostile planet Atropos. In addition to her own weapons, Selena can find new weapons on the planet and use them against the aliens. Every weapon in the game is updated throughout the game. Harry describes it this way:
For example, the Spitmaw Blaster is the archetypal shotgun you all know and love. As you progress through the game, you unlock and add different weapon features, each of which brings a unique gameplay adaptation to the behavior of the base weapon. These features are designed specifically for each type of weapon – for example, your Spitmaw Blaster can receive explosive projectiles or create acidic puddles on impact; while the Electropylon Pilot can take extra loot from enemies or create shields for the player. These weapon privileges also stack, so the combined effects can lead to many amazing results that can have unique benefits, as well as learning new styles of play.
Each weapon also has an alternate firing mode, which is randomly assigned to the weapon from a set of alternate firing modes. This includes the electrical impulses of the shock current on the tentacles of the tentacle. Pressing the L2 button halfway will allow you to aim and fire in basic mode, and pressing it all the way will allow you to fire in your weapon’s alternate mode.
There are about 10 basic weapons and over 90 weapon features, and each feature comes with three steps and 10 alternate shooting modes that you can find and try. However, Selena can only hold one weapon at a time, so you need to find the perfect weapon for the game. As you encounter different enemies in the game, you will have to adapt and use different strategies to take them out, forcing you to switch weapons along the way.
The game also deals with death in a unique way. The game goes in cycles, and each time you die in the game you complete the cycle and are sent back to the beginning of the cycle just before you collapse on the planet. With each death, you lose most of the skills and items you’ve accumulated in the game, but some are accessible to you in a new cycle, so you can make some sort of progress with them even if you die multiple times.
One of these hidden elements is the mysterious Cthonos, an alien device that generates a random element at the beginning of each cycle. This device from the other world keeps track of your performance and when you’ve made enough progress, you’ll be rewarded with a brand new item that you can use immediately and which will also be permanently added to the booty pool available from that moment on.
Another unique item found on the planet Atropos is called parasites, and these parasites change the way you play the game. They provide you with both buffs and debuffs, so you need to be very careful when using these parasites. For example, a parasite can make you regenerate if it’s weak, but it can also make your enemies leave a pool of acid if they die. This means they are high risk and high return, so you need to plan accordingly.
The match is scheduled for the 19th. March 2021 release on PS5, and now you can pre-order the game on PSN. More information on the game will be announced by Housemarque in the coming weeks, so check back here for more details on the return.
