This year sucks. We usually stayed at home and didn’t know what was going on. If ever there was a year in which games were considered compulsory entertainment so that we could ignore the chaos outside our homes, it would be 2020. Luckily it was also a year in which we were lucky to see a lot of great races.
It’s time to limit the list of the twenty races that made us smile the most this year. Before we begin, let me remind you of all our basic rules.
- The switching ports of games released in previous years were not considered acceptable.
- Remasters weren’t allowed either. We’re still talking crazy remakes.
- We watched Disco Elysium earlier this year, but it was a release in 2019. This game is not suitable, but you have to play it anyway.
- Persona 5 Royal got a 10 from us, but this game is an improved version of the previously released title. It’s still not right.
There were a lot of great races that weren’t on our list, but we want to mention them somehow. These are our honourable mentions for 2020: Wasteland 3, Get-A-Grip Chip, Neversong, Nioh 2, Maneater, Iron Man VR, Desperados III, Streets of Fury 4, Journey to the Wild Planet, The Art of Rally, Astro Game Room, Pedestrian, Dreams, Crusader Kings III, Othercide, Röki, Procession to Calvary, Demon Souls and Yakuza: Like the dragon.
Without further ado. Let’s talk about the top 20 of the best races of 2020:
20 – final remake of the film Fantasy VII
The remake of Final Fantasy VII took one of the most popular entries in the Final Fantasy franchise and rebuilt it from top to bottom. In a risky step of Square Enix, this version has not only been extended with even more depth, but some scenarios have also been completely adapted. What could easily have turned into an offensive disaster has instead led many fans to prefer this version to the original – Heidi Hawes.
19 – F1 2020
The Codemasters F1 franchise remains the only sports franchise where each new iteration far surpasses its predecessor. With the brand new, ultra-dependent MyTeam mode, it’s even better than today’s sport. I don’t know how Codmasters is going to raise the stakes compared to F1 2021, but I have no doubt it will happen. – Leo Faria
18 – bait
Carrion is a fantastic variant of the horror genre where you play a monster that bursts and kills everyone. The intense and visceral gore fits perfectly with the puzzle design of the world of Metroidvania. Despite some general traffic problems, you’ve been addicted from the start. – Jordan Hawes.
17 – Broken Pixels 1995
I’m not a nostalgic, but ARVORE makes me a nostalgic. It’s not just the gameplay, but the whole game that takes you back to 1995 and before that to 1989. It was my house, my parents, my room, my friends and my games. – Todd Eggleston
16 – Fall types: Ultimate knockout
Although Fall Guys had a difficult start, it is still one of the most unique and exciting multiplayer games in years. It’s a game that’s as much fun to play as it is to play. – Leo Faria.
15 – Pro Skater Tony Hawk 1+2
Activision hasn’t ruined this incredible remake of the first two Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games. The gameplay of the franchise is easy to learn and is currently completely impossible to master, proving that this 20-year-old game series can still be released in 2020 and beyond. And that damn brilliant soundtrack…. – Leo Faria.
14 – MUD 5
In my humble opinion, the best title in the PlayStation 5 launch window is not Demon’s Souls or Astro Game Room. Codemasters DIRT 5 showed me what the next generation of consoles really can do. One of the most beautiful games I’ve ever seen. It runs on the juiciest frames and uses DualSense features like no other game so far. – Leo Faria
13 – The last of our Part II
It may not be the best game that we have played this year, and it has suffered some plot and rhythm problems, but I can not deny that the second part of The Last of Us is impressive technically, in terms of play and, in some places, in terms of plot. Not to mention the fact that it is even more beautiful than all next generation games, while running on 2013 hardware. – Leo Faria
12 – tail blood
Blood in 2020 is what my friend Pedro was in 2019. If you took Samurai Jack, The Revenant, Hotline Miami and a pinch of John Wick and mixed them together in a beautiful and terrible orgy of violence and hatred, Bloody Bottom would be your beautiful, bearded, revenge obsessed child. – Todd Eggleston
11 – Star Wars : Squadrons
I really thought the experts would ruin Star Wars: The relays. The package was too good to be true. An inexpensive Star Wars dogfighting simulator, without microtransaction, plus VR support? And yet they managed to keep their promises. Squadrons is not only one of the best Star Wars games of all time, but also one of the best VR showcases. – Leo Faria
10 – Evergate
Evergate goes beyond beauty and emotion. A sincere and fascinating story told by the memories of the dead. The puzzles and jump’n’run and the small film scenes are accompanied by the soundtrack of the best soundtrack of the year. So good, I took the trouble to buy it. Twice. – Aaron Price
9 – A step out of the air
Remember the Mega Man Battle Network games? Take them, make them ten times stronger and make them Roguelikes. Not just any crook, but someone who is incredibly fast and has to be fast, constantly thinking about his feet. Look good and don’t blow it up. I still regularly play One Step Out of Heaven to remind me that 1. Unbelievable and 2. I’m not good at video games. – Aaron Price
8 – Half-life: Alix
Half a life: Alix is the epitome of compelling and fantastic VR. If you’ve been waiting for HL3 like the rest of us, it’s a must. A game that’s worth using an RV helmet. Although there are some strange design decisions with VR interactivity, it is easily one of the best experiences in the field so far. – Jordan Hawes.
7 – Pokémon Secret Dungeon : Rescue team DX
Nintendo did it again. After the complete and amazing remake of Link’s Awakening, it’s time to give the original Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games the same touch. With a new paint job and everything. Not only is it completely superior to the incredible original games in terms of graphics and improved quality of life, but it also offers more post-game content than the story. Unbelievable! – Aaron Price
6 – Tsushima Ghost
Ghost of Tsushima was my most anticipated title for 2020. Luckily, not only did he live up to the hype, but he made me blush in every way. With an engrossing story, powerful voice leading, fun battles, organic land navigation techniques and amazingly beautiful graphics, Ghost of Tsushima has created one of the best open-world adventure games I’ve ever experienced. – Heidi Hawes
5 – Hades
Supergiant Games, the darling of India, has once again unveiled a fantastic game with a striking artistic style, a convincing story and captivating gameplay. Hades adds new layers of depth to the genre, making it interesting for more than just die-hard rogues. – Heidi Hawes
4 – Bandicoot 4: It is time.
Crash 4 is a fantastic challenge, with a lot of variation to keep complete people like me very, very happy. Cortical anger? I’ve never heard of such a thing. – Bylen Marston.
3 – Spirit
Ghostrunner takes the gameplay of Katana Zero and Hotline Miami to the next level, with a super fast looping platform game that offers exciting gameplay and an incredible level design that I couldn’t let go of. All this is accompanied by an epic synthesizer soundtrack that puts you right in the middle of the fantastic cyberpunk world. – Kyle Nichol
2 – Ori and the will of the wise
When Ori and Wisp were first announced, I thought there was no way to go beyond the original version. But somehow… The story is as emotional as the blind forest and takes the universe in unexpected directions. There was also a redistribution during the most important game that gave him a boost to really stand out from the crowd. – Kyle Nichol
1 – DUM Eternal
DOOM eternally surpasses its predecessor in every possible way, something I never thought possible. DOOM 2016 was already one of the best and craziest first-person shooter games of all time, but DOOM Eternal makes it look like Noah’s Super 3D Ark in comparison. – Leo Faria
