It doesn’t make sense, but I don’t care.
The first Ty the Tasmanian Tiger was a 3D platformer like Mario, Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter. Ty Tasmanian Tiger 2 takes a bold approach with a non-linear open world where you can tackle multiple missions in any order, as long as you have the items needed for each mission.
I didn’t expect this game to be any closer to Crazy Jak II than any other platformer I can think of, but it makes sense for the time. Does this decision make the game worse than its predecessor? Not at all. But it’s not necessarily better than that. It’s just a brand new version of a proven formula, and it definitely works. The world at your disposal is impressively large, full of characters to interact with and different missions to choose from.
Ty Tasmanian Tiger 2 also starts with a bang. The first game started with an innocent, jungle-like level that more than half of 3D platforms call a tutorial section. Meanwhile, Ty’s second adventure begins with a real army trying to take out a police unit to save the villain from the first game. In less than ten minutes you’ll be in Ty Tasmanian Tiger 2, fighting mutant lizards in a Machi suit and destroying drones with a missile turret.
There was one more thing that surprised me: Ty Tasmanian Tiger 2 has a full kart game outside of the main game, accessible through the main menu. Right: While most franchise mascots would sell you a kart spin-off, this game includes a wide variety of karts, racers, tracks and bonus items. It’s not exactly a deep game type, but it’s manageable enough and fun in small ways.
The last thing I expected from the first level of an Australian boomerang game was a gunfight against mecha.
The PS4 remaster of the first Ty The Tasmanian Tiger didn’t improve the game’s graphics much. At least it had a much better resolution, aspect ratio, and a solid frame. But overall, it’s almost identical to the original GameCube. This is more or less the case with this port of Ty Tasmanian Tiger 2 Switch, but unfortunately the frame rate is not as consistent as before. Maybe it’s because of the Switch’s lower performance, or maybe it’s because there are a lot more levels in this game, but you’ll notice some framerate issues from time to time.
What is better than the first Ty game, though, is that the camera isn’t as annoying as it used to be. He’s easier to control and behaves much less schizophrenically, even if his default position is uncomfortably close to your protagonist. Karting controls are also surprisingly robust, with the same simple controls and even better than average drift mechanics.
Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 2 has a race mode that is available on all maps from the start. Let’s talk about fucking for your dollar!
The Ty Tasmanian Tiger 2 is a radical departure from its predecessor, and most impressively, it has aged surprisingly well. Well, except for the poor frame rate in this version of the Switch. It’s no better or worse than the original Ty, considering the gameplay is generally different. While this remaster doesn’t breathe new life into the 2004 title, given the minor visual and performance updates, it’s a rewarding experience to be able to play this open-world platformer.
