While Animal Crossing: New Horizons was released in late July, fans are still waiting for the game to deliver on the promise of “the ultimate Animal Crossing experience.” So far, New Horizons’ biggest promised features—a first for the series—are online multiplayer and pet ownership. However, the most important feature, arguably, is the ability to create our own designs for “official” campsites, something we have only been able to do with the use of mods.
“Animal Crossing New Horizons” is a game that was released in the month of July by Nintendo. Since the release of the game, fans have been dissatisfied with the lack of content updates that were announced by Nintendo in the months leading up to the release. Many fans have started a petition on change.org, and as of writing this, there are over 50 thousand signatures asking Nintendo to “patch up the game and make it the game we all wanted it to be.”

Animal Crossing New Horizons was released over a year ago. Since then we’ve gotten many content updates, some with new gameplay, some with only minor changes.
Looking back at the history of the Animal Crossing franchise and comparing it to the latest installment, it’s clear that some beloved features are missing. New Leaf, the previous game for the Nintendo 3DS, had many shops to explore. Leif’s Tuinwinkel, where you can find all your gardening supplies. Even K.K. Slider had his own LOL club where you could spend an evening seeing his amazing concert. Another example: Brewster opened a coffee house in his town where people could work part-time and provide residents with hot, tasty drinks. One of my favorite excursions on the island to take a friend to.
At the time of New Horizon’s release, many of these elements were not yet in the game, and while there have been several leaks and mentions that Brewster will make an appearance in the game, we have yet to see such an update. As a result, many fans of the game consider it unfinished to begin with. Especially compared to New Leaf, which came out with all these features and had only one major content update years after its release – Welcome Amiibo, which added Amiibo support to the game.
The gaming industry has changed

In fact, New Horizons lacks some of the features we’ve come to know and appreciate from previous games in the series. But if you look at the game industry as a whole, it makes sense, at least in terms of collaboration. Games are no longer made exclusively for gamers, but have become a mass product designed to appeal to as many people as possible, even those who don’t consider themselves gamers. By releasing content updates over the years, the game stays relevant and continues to be shared on social media channels years after its initial release.
Since Nintendo releases content updates every month, no matter how small, New Horizon is mentioned every time on major gaming websites, keeping people coming back to the game and feeling like there is something new to discover. In fact, all this content should have been in the game from day one.
A good example of this is the ability to swim in the ocean, a feature that Nintendo initially held back, only to come out with a coveted feature a few months after its initial release.
In some ways, Animal Crossing New Horizons has become complete from Nintendo’s perspective, but fans of the series are definitely missing out on a lot of great features that were in the previous games. Leif’s Tuinwinkel is now a temporary kiosk on the town square. K.K Sliders’ club, LOL, has turned into a stool in front of City Hall. Brewster? He hasn’t even shown up yet.
That’s why it’s so important for Nintendo to have competition in the village simulator market. Hokko Life, for example, is an excellent example of what Nintendo does best.
