Cyberpunk 2077 is by far the most anticipated title of the year, not only as a game, but also in technological terms – especially by raytracing.
That is why we have already dealt extensively with the issue of real-time radiation monitoring. What does she look like, does she even stand out? What about DLSS?
This is an important observation in the run-up to the conference: We are not asking for any performance at the moment, because we have only seen the provisional version of Cyberpunk 2077, which is not yet definitive in terms of performance. A separate technology test for the launch version and a separate performance test for raytracing and DLSS with benchmarks will follow shortly.
Our testing system:
- GPU : Nvidia Geforce RTX 3090
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X
- RAM: 32,0 GO DDR4
- Storage : 2.0 byte SSD
- The system: Window 10
Reflections on beam tracks
One of the most striking effects of the radiation repertoire is the reflection. Cyberpunk 2077 is no exception, as can be seen in the following images
In a puddle on the left picture you see a detailed reflection of the lanterns hanging above the street. The image on the right only shows coarse color patterns.
Dispersion illumination for beam detection
The stray light is less conspicuous.
In the picture on the left a neon sign (two figures next to the door) spreads light on the wall behind it, while in the picture on the right nothing is visible.
Shadows for beam detection
Depending on the scene, the shadows that follow the rays are not always as clearly visible as the reflections, as can be seen in the following images:
In the picture on the left, near the small windows behind the garbage can, the shadows of the protruding wall are more diffuse than in the picture on the right. The garbage bags in the left bin are darker and therefore more realistic than those on the right.
General impression and DLSS
In detail, some effects are not as important as one would expect from a large ray tracing concept. But when you look at the big picture, it all seems more realistic:
The red neon sign of the two images merges diffuse into the surroundings of the image on the left. The deeper you look at the scene, the less you feel like you’re in the shadows and sharpness. In the image on the right, however, the impression of brightness remains sharper, shadows and colours remain highly saturated even at a distance.
DLSS in cyberpunk : We also had a first impression of the introduction of the Nvidia AI up scaler DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling).
The depth-of-field impression is further enhanced by the two DLSS modes, bringing it closer to the original image without tracing the rays. In general, DLSS offers very good image quality, although, as expected, the mode of operation is slightly less for a somewhat coarser image.
