If you’re going to beat the first boss in Returnal Phrike, you’re going to have to be smart about how you approach the fight. Here is a breakdown of the boss’s strengths and weaknesses, and how you should approach the fight. (If you’re looking for Returnal Phrike walkthroughs, check out this Returnal Phrike boss guide for tips on how to beat the game’s bosses.)
This Return of Fricke boss guide shows you how to defeat the first final boss of a game called Fricke. This boss can be found in overgrown ruins, fighting with projectiles and melee attacks.
To prepare for the first boss, you need a good weapon with some permanent features that make it stronger than the basic version. You’re more likely to defeat the final boss if you have an assault rifle that you’ve used on much smaller enemies to gain weapon properties.
Additionally, if you use a healing item before starting the fight, you have a chance to stay in the fight as long as possible if you get hit by one of Phrike’s devastating attacks.
Fricke’s Boss Return Guide
Below we have detailed how to defeat Phrike and his attack patterns in all three phases of the fight.
How to defeat Phrike
Before you go into battle, you need to think about two important things that will help you be on the winning side in this battle. For starters, you have to constantly move left or right to dodge the various projectiles Fricke throws at you when he appears. Second, you must maintain a distance that allows you to anticipate the direction of the flying projectiles so that you have enough time to calculate an evasion or a swing. If you’re far enough away, you don’t even have to dodge the projectiles, as you can just run away to miss them.
Phrike fights in three phases, each phase restores your health bar to its maximum, and the next phase brings several new attacks to confuse the fight. Unsurprisingly, the final phase is the hardest of the first two, with Phrike using all of his attacks and picking up the pace between his mixed attacks.
Attacks begin with red homing missiles that fire a barrage of bright red missiles at your position. This attack is pretty easy to dodge, and you can just run in any direction to avoid it. The attack is followed by projectiles with yellow balls falling from above. Multiple balls require the player to chase each ball and find space between them to avoid being hit. This attack is more to distract the player from the boss, as Phrike will immediately follow with another attack to hit you. The direct attack is with fast moving purple orbs that he sends at you, causing you to move again.
As you already understood, to dodge all the attacks, you have to constantly shoot at the boss to keep the pressure on. You may have to stop when you swerve, but continue as soon as you get back on your feet.
Phrike introduces some additional attacks in the second phase of the attack. The first is a rock-hard melee attack indicated by a glowing hand, and the second is a quick beam attack that’s pretty hard to dodge, but nothing is impossible if you learn to anticipate it. When he uses the laser on the ground, the red ring slowly expands and becomes larger. You can just jump across the ring, but be careful because a melee attack will immediately follow.
In the final phase of the fight, Phrike will mix up all the attacks, increase speed, and do more melee attacks to knock you out. You can think of it as the boss’s last attempt to throw everything he has at full speed, and it is, because he can get you with a few punches. Here you have to be aware of all his attacks, anticipate them, keep moving and dodging when necessary, and keep firing your bullets at Phrike.
