Nintendo sold 2.13 million switches in the first quarter and 4.8 million in the second quarter, for a total of 6.93 million in the first six months of the reporting period. Compared to last year, this is an increase of 36.7%. This brings the total lifetime of the switch to 41.67 million units! This data also indicates that the Switch Lite, which launched on the 20th. Released in September 2019, 1.95 million copies sold in just 11 days on the market. Nintendo expects this to continue to be the case in the fiscal year ending December 31. By March 2020, 18 million Switch systems will have been sold.
In the first six months of the current fiscal year, 58.49 million units of Switch software were sold. This is an increase of 38.8% over the previous year. Nintendo expects to sell 125 million pieces of software this fiscal year. In the past six months, Switch’s first eight games have sold over a million units.
This semester, Super Mario Maker 2 is leading the way with sales of 3.93 million. The legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening’s contributions total an impressive $3.13 million. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is racing at 2.32 million. The emblem of fire: Three houses managed to transfer 2.29 million. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate continues to struggle to reach the top with 1.9 million copies sold. My favorite game of all time, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, continues to climb with 1.76 million copies sold. Both Mario games bring the new Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe with 1.28 million and Super Mario Party with 1.2 million controls.
Like most video game companies, Nintendo has experienced tremendous growth in its digital business. Packaged and downloadable versions of software, as well as Nintendo Switch Online pricing, helped boost digital sales to 71.6 billion yen (up 83% from the previous year). The mobile phone business brought in 19.9 billion yen (up 6.4% from the previous year).
Some of the biggest games not yet released on Switch are today (Luigi’s Mansion 3), Pokémon Sword & Shield on the 15th. November 2019 and Animal Crossing on the 15th. November 2019: New Horizons arrives on March 20, 2020), and it looks like Nintendo is in a fantastic position. If it manages to maintain a steady stream of successful publications, Switch’s business should continue to flourish.
