StarWars.com : The game seems to be a massive undertaking – you can play all nine films in the saga, and each level is built from scratch. Tell us about the decision to act as hard as you want.
Jonathan Smith: As fans, we’ve always wanted to do something big! With the end of the Skywalker saga in Episode IX, and 15 years after the first LEGO Star Wars, it really seemed like time to aim as high as possible and create a LEGO landmark.
Craig Derrick: If you had the chance to make a one-shot or build a LEGO Star Wars game from scratch that brought the nine Skywalker saga films together for the first time in a single moment, would you take it or just drop it? We all knew beforehand that we had to do things right and respect what had been done before by bringing new elements to the franchise. We wanted the game to be epic in size and scope, while bringing the player closer to the action than ever before. It took new technology, new game mechanics, and a passionate development team to create a cast of hundreds of characters and all the familiar worlds they inhabit – all with the charm and humor you’d expect from a LEGO Star Wars game. Honestly, this game is massive because it had to be.
StarWars.com : I like that you can start the game at any point in the saga.
Jonathan Smith: Freedom of choice is a very important principle for us! We love stories and storytelling, but we also feel, as players, and with a special focus on young players who are encouraged to experiment and change, that there are stories that can be played with as the player sees fit.
Craig Derrick: We all have our favorites that we want to get into, while others may want to start with the new trilogy, and yet we find that most want to start at the beginning of the saga to see and play where it all began.
StarWars.com : There are also hundreds of playable characters. It’s pretty amazing. Other than the main characters and the villains, how did you choose the lesser known characters? And if you could tell me which new character you think would be best for the fans?
Jonathan Smith: We’re all fans; there’s no shortage of characters we want to play with. And you can’t ask us to pick just one favorite! The fact that the entire distribution is brought together in this LEGO form – a complete collection from Admiral Akbar to Zorias Bliss – is what makes the game so special.
Craig Derrick: There are nearly 500 characters in this game, and many of them are playable. To choose the characters for a game of this magnitude, we simply looked at all the movies in the saga and tried to include as many as possible. It often involves a scenario and the character’s specific role in the quest and game. Of course we have almost all your favorite characters and villains from the movies, lots of background players, a few surprises, and … Chopsticks!
